Outside La Catedral
La Catedral and El Triunfo
Cusco's magnificent Catedral is flanked by the 18th-century church of Jesús María, to the right and the Renaissance El Triunfo - the city's first Christian church - to the left. Built on what once was the palace of Inca Wiracocha, and made in part from stones hauled from the fortress of Sasayhumán outside the city, the cathedral mixes Spanish Baroque architecture with Inca stonework, Begun in 1559, it took a century to build.
The cathedral also contains magnificent examples of Escuela Cusqueña paintings, including some by Diego Quispe Tito, the 17th-century Indian painter widely regarded as the master of the school. In the corner next to the sacristy is a painting by Marcos Zapata f the Last Supper, with Christ and his Apostles dining on roast guinea pig (cuy), hot peppers, and Andean cheese.
The city's most venerated status is the crucified Christ known as Nuestro Señor de los Temblores (Our Lord of the Earthquakes), depicted in a painting beside the main altar, which is of solid silver. The statue was paraded around the city during the 1650 earthquake, and after the tremors eventually stopped it was credited with miraculously bring about the end of seismic activity.
El Triunfo, which means 'the triumph', was built to mark the Spanish victory over the Indians in the great rebellion of 1536. The uprising was led by Manco Inca, a descendant of an Inca leader, who the Spaniards assumed would be their political puppet. They were surprised, then, to find Manco and his army of followers surrounding the city. Cusco was under siege for many months, but the Inca were finally defeated at Sacsayhumán.
But unfortunately that I lost my hat there !
