Trek in 百內國家公園 Parque Nacional Torres del Paine - Introduction

Torres del Paine

Covering 242,242 ha, 145 km northwest of Puerto Natales, this national park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a trekker's mecca for its diverse wildlife and spectacular surroundings.  Taking its name from the Tehuelche word 'Paine', meaning 'blue', the park encompasses stunning scenery, with constantly changing views of peaks, glaciers and icebergs, vividly coloured lakes of turquoise, ultramarine and grey, and quiet green valleys filled with wild flowers.  In the centre of the park is one of the most impressive mountain areas on earth, a granite massif from which rise oddly shaped peaks of over 2600m, known as the 'Torres' (towers) and 'Cuernos' (horns) of Paine.

There are 15 peaks above 2000m, of which the highest is Cerro Paine Grande (3050m).  Few places can compare to its steep, forested talus slopes topped by 1000m vertical shafts of basalt with conical caps; these are the remains of frozen magma in ancient volcanic throats, everything else having been eroded.  On the western edge of the park is the enormous Campo de Hielo Sur Icefield.  Four main ventisqueros (glaciers) - Grey, Dickson, Zapata and Tyndall - branch off it, their meltwater forming a complex series of lakes and streams, which lead into fjords extending to the sea.  Two other glaciers, Frances, and Los Perros, descend on the western side of the central massif.

Quite simply one of the world's greatest national parks.  When trekkers dream, they dream of Torres del Paine.  Those with iron wills can put themselves to the ultimate test and attempt the full circuit, a seven-to-eight-day trek that showcases all the splendor the park has to offer.  If you want to get away from the crowds for a real Patagonian wilderness experience pack up your tent and head off around the north side of the mountains on the week-long circuit trek.

The W

Trek for days through some of the most spectacular scenery in Patagonia among iceberg-filled lakes, valleys, waterfalls, glaciers, all he time dominated by the imposing giant granite-plugs of the Paine Massif.  Experience four seasons in a few hours and have a warm bed and a cooked meal at the end of an arduous day's trekking.

The above is the 5 day trek - The "W" Classic.  I took the "W" Active one which combines the Day 4 & 5.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime trekking experience that lots of trekkers would share their experience after taking the trek.  One of which I found quite informative is shared below -
