Parque Nacional Los Glaciares 25.11.2018

Los Glaciares National Park is located in the area known as Austral Andes in Argentina, in the south west of Santa Cruz on the border with Chile. By his magnificent natural beauty, it constitutes a wonder in the world, and was declared "World Heritage" by UNESCO in 1981.

Its name refer to the glaciers that are born on the Ice Caps - the largest continental ice extension after Anctartica- which occupies almost half its area.  Also known as Patagonic Continental Ice, creates 47 big glaciers, 13 of which flow to the Atlantic. There are also more than 200 smaller glaciers, unconnected to the Ice Caps.

As a result of the enormous pressure of the antique ice and the subsequent thaw, three big lakes, two of them inside the NP appeared: Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma, the waters of which flow as Rio Santa Cruz to the Atlantic Ocean crossing the province.

Alternative Tour Glacier Perito Moreno

I got up at 6:00 a.m. There was full house (total 7 ladies) in the room, I tried to keep noise down and went for breakfast quickly.   The cafe bar is at the attic over the reception.  All the guests could stay there for refreshment and breakfast when waiting for pick up by the tour operator.

The tour operator of this tour is also the owner of the hostel I stayed and this tour was recommended by the guide book.

We traveled along the Lago Argentino, with snow-capped mountain on the other side of the lake.

We stopped at the lake side and the guide showed us details of the plantation near by

Beautiful clouds on the sky

Fantastic designed truck tailored for this tour

Argentina is famous of its cattle breeding

A toilet stop at a farm house, also for a cup of coffee and photo with the little sheep

Glacier Perito Moreno

Tourists from around the globe are overawed by the immensity of this glacier.  An expanse of white stretches apparently without end until a wall of jagged blue ice, millions of years old, rumbles and fractures, crashing into the turquoise waters below.  Perito Moreno is the world's only advancing and retreating glacier.  The sight of this expanse of ice, like a frozen sea, its waves sculpted by wind and time into beautiful turquoise folds and crevices, is unforgettable.

First sight of the glacier from far away

We stopped at the lakeside.  The water was cloudy with lots of minerals brought by the moving glacier

The guide dragged a float ice to the shore and broke it into few granules.  I was the first one to take one and taste the ice

Few of us joined the boat trip to watch the glacier on the water

After the boat trip, we were brought to the stages for close watch the glacier

We were astonished by a loud roar by a fall of huge ice hunk, with a big wave on the water

The glacier is pushing forward to the island and will block the lake and led to a natural phenomenon : glacier arch on the left.  Once every few years, there is a giant fall of the arch and attracts many tourists.

There are three routes (yellow, blue and red) for different perspectives to watch the glacier

A fall of a small hunk of ice made a loud echo in the air

Not sure whether this lift is in operation

Times up to get back, really missed the place and reluctant to go

A sudden and mighty roar announces the fall of another hunk of ice into the milky turquoise water below.
