El Calafate 24.11.2018

El Calafate

Sits on the south shore of Lago Argentino and exists almost entirely as a tourist centre for visiting Parque Nacional los Glaciares, 50km west.  Though the town was founded in 1927, it grew very slowly until the opening of the road to the Perito Moreno Glaciar in the 1960s, since which time it has expanded rapidly as a tourist town.

This city is quite interesting geographically that it is divided into upper and lower parts.  The lower part develops along the main street, Av. del Liberator leading to Lago Argentino, which is now a tourist spot and meeting place for restaurants and souvenir shops.  The upper part should be the newly developed area with many luxury hotels are located.  Rodoviario (bus terminal) is located in the upper part as well.  The two parts are linked by a small road whirling down and a staircase, right opposite to the hostel I stayed.

After checking in, I went to the supermarket for grocery stocking, and had a brief view of the city.

a bridge leading the hostel to the city centre

Later then, I took a shuttle and visited the Glaciarium, in which all the glaciers in the region were described in details, including the Lago Grey.

Just learnt that there was a debate on the national border between Chile & Argentina, to cover the glaciers in which country.

There is an alarm to remind us the end of the world if we do not take action to avoid endangering our Earth

Sight outside the Glaciarium - windy

Outlook of the Glaciarium, follows the shape of snow

Park in El Calafate, along Av. del Libertador, where the shuttle stops

Visit Pura Vida for dinner, which opens at 7:30 p.m.  It is famous for its lake view and home made Argentine food

Oversee the Lago Argentino, the largest lake in Argentina

Pumpkin soup

Lamb chop brew - a little bit salty

The wooden houses along Av. del Liberator assemble those in Northern Europe

Southern Spirit Lake Argentino - with many motorcycles were driven inside this day

many souvenir shops, with interesting stuff on sale here

Stray dogs everywhere, they barked and chased the cars in the middle of the road

Southroad - Patagônia Extrema

Sunset at around 9:00 p.m. I then got back to the hostel.  With a relaxing day finished, I was astonished to find out the lock of my luggage can not be opened.  After trying to unlock for half an hour, I gave up and went bathing and bed (no clothes changed)!

There are many nice restaurant along Av. del Libertador, one of which, Casimiro Biguá Parrilla

 Pink and juicy steak, yummy

Walk in dusk back to hostel, cross the bridge
