San Ignacio - Saturday market & Eatery 3.6.2017

Farmers Market

Saturday is the big market day in San Ignacio when traders come from all over Cayo to sell fresh bargain produce, handicrafts and clothing.  The dozen or so food stalls set up in the middle of the action serve quick-fire street food - cheap and tasty.  Smaller versions of the market happen most other days of the week.  Try the taco and quesadilla stands.

To experience the true cultural tapestry of Belize first-hand, head down to the Farmers Market on Saturday, when San Ignacio's open-air market draws farmers and food producers from all ends of Belize (culturally and geographically) to buy and sell all manner of fruits, vegetables, jams and diary products.  I bought a bag of 4 mangoes at USD0.5

After visiting Xunantunich, we got back to San Ignacio.  Then I'd like to have lunch in the Market area.  There are a few stalls manned by some Guatemalan/Mexican women.

Horchata (In Mexico and Guatemala, horchata is made of rice, sometimes with vanilla and always with cinnamon, somewhat like soya milk) + Quesadillas (minced meat paste in the bread, added toppings by yourself)

Unkown fruit (sweet and juicy with hard nuts inside)

2 mangoes bought at the market and a lime for free

New Fresh Bakery

Best place in town for fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, croissants, apple turnovers and good coffee.  It's in an open space just north of the market.  I got to here early for the freshest, straight-out-of-oven stuff.

Hode's Place

Locals love this rambling barn-size place north of the city centre.  A large terrace restaurant opening onto a citrus orchard and kid's playground, it's a popular spot with families or for an evening drink.  Friendly service and satisfying food - from burritos and fajitas to steaks, seafood and rice and beans - complete the recipe.

Mickey's Snack Shop
A small Mexican Food stall with many choices - tacos, torillas, quesadillas, pandades, empanadas, and burritos (with bean and meat paste in the roll)
