Flores 3.6.2017

Set on a natural island in Lago de Peten Itza, connected via a small causeway to shore, Flores (population 7,000) is a peaceful, civilized place now largely dependent on tourism.  It is a small, tranquil, and historic town that's by far the most pleasant urban center in the department.

This tiny island (joined by a 500m causeway to the shore) on Lago de Peten Itza has historically been a natural point of settlement.  It remained the capital of the Itza Maya until 1697, when the Spanish finally forced the town under their control.

The best way to explore Flores is to stroll around the lane that circumscribes the shoreline - it will take you about 15 min to walk around the cobbled streets and lanes of the town.  The older houses are brightly painted wooden and adobe constructions.  There's a fine plaza in the center of town that boasts a twin-domed cathedral.

As I'd registered for the dawn Tikal tour, I needed to pay for entrance fee of Q150+100 to the bank direct.  The tour guy dropped me at the Hotel La Casona de la Isla to settle down.  I then went to the bank by myself.  The only bank on the island was found closed when I got there.  So I walked all the way from the island back to Santa Elena.

Finally I found a bank in Mundo Maya (International Mall) and queued up outside the bank. All the customers need to leave their bags at the security guard before entering the bank.

There was a descent bakery that I could buy some bread for tomorrow trip

Typical Mexican bread I saw in the bakery

It began to rain in the afternoon

In the evening, I chose to have local food for dinner.  First with a glass of refreshing iced juice
