Puerto Maldonado 21 May 2015

Amazon Basin

Peru's vast tract of the Amazon may contain the world's greatest biodiversity.  Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado are two sites for the wildlife preserves, jungle lodges, rain-forest hikes, and boat excursions.

Tambopata National Reserve
This vast protected area near Puerto Maldonado, an 8-hour drive east of Cuzco, is an excellent place to experience the myriad flora and fauna of the Amazon Basin.  A dozen nature lodges scattered along the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers provide comfortable bases for hikes, or boat trips into the surrounding wilderness to see several types of monkeys, dinosaurian caimans, giant rodents called capybaras, and some of the reserve's hundreds of bird species.

Riding the overnight bus to Puerto Maldonado, then we were led to the city centre, ready for boat trip from Madre de Dios Ferry Dock.  At here, we could see the gorgeous bridge over  Rio Madre de Dios.

I was really scared that I could not step on this wooden pass-board to get onto the boat, with my suitcase and a big-bottle (9L) of water.

On the boat to the resort

Tanja showed her naughty face, it was really difficult for me to carry all the stuff to get off the boat and climb on the wooden path all the way lead to the resort
